UPC Barcodes: The North American Retail Standard

UPC-A is the 12-digit barcode used widely in the United States and Canada. It is closely related to EAN-13 and read by the same scanners.

UPC vs EAN

UPC-A has 12 digits; EAN-13 has 13. Most modern POS systems read both, but retailers may specify which they require.

Getting valid numbers

For products on shop shelves, obtain a GS1 prefix. The check digit is calculated automatically when you generate the code.

Tip

UPC-E is a compressed six-digit form for small packages where a full UPC-A will not fit.
