Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A carries 12 digits and EAN-13 carries 13. The two are closely related and nearly all modern point-of-sale scanners read both, but a retailer may specify which one they require.
Can I invent my own UPC number?
Only for internal use such as your own stock system. Products sold through retailers need a company prefix issued by GS1 so the number is unique worldwide.
Why does my UPC fail to scan at the till?
Most failures come from printing too small, low contrast, or missing quiet zones on the left and right. Print at full size in solid black on white and leave the margins clear.
