Frequently asked questions

Where do the first three digits come from?

They identify the GS1 member organisation that issued the prefix. They indicate where the number was registered, not where the product was manufactured.

Do I need EAN-13 or EAN-8?

Use EAN-13 by default. EAN-8 exists for packages that are physically too small to carry the full symbol.

Can the same EAN-13 be used on two products?

No. Each distinct product and variant needs its own number, otherwise stock and pricing systems cannot tell them apart.
