Frequently asked questions

Why does my Code 39 have asterisks around it?

The asterisk is the traditional start and stop character. It is part of the symbol, not part of your data, and scanners strip it.

Can Code 39 encode lowercase letters?

Standard Code 39 is uppercase only. Full ASCII Code 39 encodes lowercase through character pairs, but not every scanner is configured to decode it.

Is Code 39 or Code 128 better?

Code 128 is denser and handles the full character set. Choose Code 39 only when existing hardware or a specification requires it.
